What Is a MERV Rating?

  • Pets or mild allergies: A MERV 10–11 filter offers meaningfully better particle capture without overloading most residential systems.
  • Asthma, respiratory conditions, or immunocompromised household members: MERV 13 may be appropriate if your system supports it. Confirm with your HVAC contractor first and plan for more frequent filter changes, as denser filters load up faster.

Filter size, frame depth, and change frequency all interact with MERV rating to determine real-world performance. A MERV 13 filter that's rarely changed will perform worse — and restrict airflow more — than a MERV 8 filter replaced on schedule.
